Putting People First

I’m Onnie Shekerjian.  Here is my plan to put Tempe residents, neighborhoods and businesses first:

Support Public Safety

Community safety is a top priority.  I will make certain our police and fire departments have the staff and resources they need to keep our citizens safe.  That is why Police and Fire Organizations have endorsed me for Council.

Protect Neighborhoods

While our city is involved in economic development, we cannot lose sight of our neighborhoods. I will push for strict code enforcement to protect our residential areas from factors that threaten our quality of life such as ”party houses”. I propose the creation of “Neighborhood Planning Committees” to empower residents with a formal voice on neighborhood issues.

Promote Fiscal Responsibility

I will treat Tempe citizens’ hard-earned tax dollars with the utmost respect because I understand it is your money. That is why I support the promised reduction in our property tax rate. If I make a pledge to hold taxes at a certain level I will keep my promise. 

Encourage Balanced Development

 Abusing eminent domain for Tempe’s business development is just wrong.  At the same time, we must work together to guarantee Tempe is a friendly place to do business.

Preserve Tempe’s Distinct Character

I will not forget what makes Tempe unique: Our neighborhoods, ASU, our local businesses, schools and historic sites.  Protecting our community character for future generations is important to Tempe.

Champion Open Government

City Hall belongs to us - the people.  I will fight to ensure Tempe’s city business is accessible, conducted in public, works honestly and is open to all.
